Dry Transformer Products for
Medical Applications

Patient isolation is the number one design consideration in these applications. Isolation is best characterized by the level of insulation resistance required, hi pot test levels and corona discharge thresholds acceptable within the application.
Secondary considerations should include Leakage Inductance, Inductance, and Capacitance. The objective is to achieve a sharp rise time while minimizing overshoot. The designer needs to look at the poles and zeroes for the capacitor and inductor to insure they offset each other.
BIL design considerations have typically not been the concern of design engineers in medical applications. Traditionally medical facilities have worked to ensure their susceptibility to fluctuations in the external grid are ameliorated by surge suppressors and self contained back up power generation capability. As medical facilities have increased in size and become more self sustaining, their internal grid can induce voltage surges or voltage drops as large chillers, stand by power systems, and specialty high voltage diagnosis equipment contend with dynamic loading and inductive kick back.
Typical types of transformers / magnetics include pulse transformers, gate drive transformers, isolation transformers, power transformers, STIM transformers and Inductors.
